[/vc_column_text][vc_accordion active_tab=”1″ style=”boxed_accordion”][vc_accordion_tab title=”Overview” title_tag=”h5″][vc_column_text]Phlebotomists typically do the following:- Draw blood from patients and blood donors
- Talk with patients and donors so they are less nervous about having their blood drawn
- Verify a patient or donor’s identity to ensure proper labeling
- Label the drawn blood for testing or processing
- Enter patient information into an onsite database
- Assemble and maintain medical instruments such as needles, test tubes, and blood vials
Phlebotomists primarily draw blood, which is then used for different kinds of medical laboratory testing. In medical and diagnostic laboratories, patient interaction is often only with the phlebotomist. Because all blood samples look the same, phlebotomists must identify and label the sample they have drawn and enter it into a database. Some phlebotomists draw blood for other purposes, such as at blood drives where people donate blood. In order to avoid causing infection or other complications, phlebotomists must keep their work area and instruments clean and sanitary.[/vc_column_text][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab title=”Outlook” title_tag=”h5″][vc_column_text]According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, phlebotomists are part of the medical technician industry, which is currently on the rise.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects this industry to grow at least 10 percent through 2018. Driving the growth for this occupation are the combined factors of a growing population, new and improved medical testing, and the increased availability of medical services. Because of these factors, it is unlikely that there will be a shortage of phlebotomy positions in the near future.[/vc_column_text][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab title=”Program Information” title_tag=”h5″][vc_column_text]To qualify for the Phlebotomy Technician program, students must show verification of current employment in the medical field.
